What to know before you come in
Nervous about your first class? Don't be. No experience and no gi required — just show up ready to learn. Here are a few simple things to help your first session go smoothly. Most of it comes down to respecting your training partners.
What to wear
Comfortable athletic clothes you can move in — a t-shirt or rash guard with shorts, leggings, or compression pants. Avoid zippers, buttons, or pockets.
No gi needed yet
You don't need to own a gi for your first class. We'll let you know what to bring for your trial.
Trim your nails
Trim your fingernails and toenails beforehand — long nails can scratch a training partner.
Leave jewelry at home
No rings, earrings, necklaces, or watches on the mat — they can cause injuries to you or your partner.
Come clean
Shower before class, wear clean clothes, and use deodorant. Cleanliness is part of respecting your partners.
Sick or cut? Sit it out
Stay home if you're feeling ill, and wait on any open wound or skin infection until it's healed — jiu-jitsu is close contact.
